Opening: The FRAME Grant Show – Textually Active

April 7, 2017 @ 5:00 pm - 9:00 pm

New work by Jarel Grant BFA ’17, opening Apr 7th from 5-9pm, on view through Apr 16th.

As activists, voters, authors, politicians, and citizens, people of color throughout history have been systematically restricted from their freedom of language, freedom of press, and freedom to protest. Despite these obstacles, we [African Americans] have been resilient nonetheless, using our closest resources of language, text, and sound to remain politically aware, vocally present, and, most importantly, textually active. Inspired in part by the 1968 murder of Carol Jenkins – an African American student stabbed after handing out encyclopedias in a sundown town, Martinsville, Indiana – “Textually Active” questions what it means to be an African-American writer in “post-racial America”.
